We are only two races into the 2025 Formula 1 season and a major driver change could already be on the horizon.
As reported by ESPN, Red Bull is considering replacing Liam Lawson with Yuki Tsunoda for the Japanese Grand Prix after a disappointing start to the season for the Red Bull driver.
Lawson has had a nightmare start to his first full-time season in Formula 1. The Red Bull driver qualified 18th in the season opener in Melbourne and ended up crashing out of the race on Lap 47.
His race in China did not go much better, as he qualified dead last in 20th place and finished the race in 12th, not even being able to score points when three other drivers ahead of him had been disqualified.
This nightmare start to the season is causing Red Bull to consider dropping Lawson and promoting Tsunoda from its sister team, VCARB. The Japanese driver is in his fifth season with the sister team and had been overlooked when it comes to the second Red Bull seat but appears to finally have a chance to make the step up.
Tsunoda has had great qualifying form so far this season, putting his car fifth in the season opener and ninth in China before unfortunate strategic errors caused him to lose places in both grand prix. His form not only this season, but last season as well, has shown that Tsunoda would be a major improvement over Lawson.
With the third race of the season, the Japanese Grand Prix, approaching in under two weeks, Red Bull has a major decision on its hands that could determine how the rest of its season plays out and how much of a fight it can put up if it hopes to reclaim the Constructors' Championship this season.
