Iga Swiatek addresses recent criticisms after record-setting feat in Miami

The Pole's consistency should be lauded, but her recent outbursts and questionable behavior have tainted the fans' appreciation for her achievements. The 23-year-old was lambasted for nearly whacking the ball boy at Indian Wells earlier this season, an incident that was preceded by several other on-court outbursts in the last year or so.

Swiatek understands her public perception has taken a beating but wants fans to show her grace. After Sunday's win, she detailed her recent social media post in which she blasted detractors for their "harsh judgments" towards her and for not letting her learn from her growing pains. The five-time slam winner revealed she "doesn't check the Internet" anymore during tournaments to block out the noise.  

"This is not the perfect way to support me," Swiatek said of the extreme scrutiny she faces. "Obviously, I know there are fans who are always supportive. Honestly, this [social media] post was also for them to explain why I've been a bit more frustrated and what was in my head for the past few months. Also, a little bit for me, because I wanted to let it go and focus on the future."

Swiatek explained why she unburdened herself through the controversial post, in which she called out the double standards among fans who labeled her "immature or hysterical" for expressing emotions after previously calling her "a robot" for being stoic.

"I'll try to enjoy this moment now, but I'll assess the situation after the tournament when I actually go on the Internet," she added.

Swiatek is seeking her first title in 2025 after losing in the semifinals at Indian Wells and the Australian Open. She will next face veteran Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the fourth round in Miami.
