The New York Yankees began the 2025 regular season with a bang.
Catcher Austin Wells, batting leadoff, hit a solo home run to give New York an early 1-0 lead over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Wells pulled the 2-0 pitch to right field, and the line drive shot just got over the short 8-foot outfield wall.
Per ESPN, Wells became the first catcher to hit a leadoff home run on Opening Day in MLB history. MLB.com added that Wells became the first Yankees player with a leadoff home run on Opening Day.
The solo blast came after Yankees starting pitcher Carlos Rodon cruised through the opening half of the first inning on nine pitches.
The hot start could quickly wash away the taste of last season's World Series disappointment.
The Yankees lost to the Dodgers in five games, with Los Angeles celebrating its title at Yankee Stadium after New York blew a 5-0 Game 5 lead.
Wells, 24, made his major league debut on Sept. 1, 2023. He played 115 games last season and slashed .229/.322/.395 with 13 home runs and 55 runs batted in.
On Tuesday, Boone announced the unusual decision to declare Wells the Yanks' leadoff hitter. Generally, leadoff batters have been speedier players, although that's been challenged by analytics, which values reaching base more than speed.
"I think he's going to be a guy in his career that is going to get on base," Boone said. "That's my No. 1 criteria for the leadoff spot... I think he's going to be a really good offensive player right now." (h/t Yahoo Sports)
Wells rewarded Boone's faith with his historic leadoff home run.
