Watch: Astros prospect Cam Smith records hit in first MLB at-bat

Astros right fielder Cam Smith began his MLB career in style.

On Thursday during Opening Day, Smith knocked a chopper through the gap between first and second base and into right field for his first major-league hit.

Shorstop Jeremy Pena, who reached base earlier in the inning after being hit by a Clay Holmes pitch, ran from first to third on the single and scored two batters later when center fielder Jake Meyers grounded into a fielder's choice, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead.

On Tuesday, Houston's social media team shared a video of Astros manager Joe Espada announcing that Smith, 22, made the team's 40-man roster.

Espada was joined by Smith's mother, who congratulated her son on his staggeringly quick climb to the majors.

The Astros acquired Smith in the December trade that sent outfielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs.

Chicago drafted Smith, who played collegiately at Florida State, No. 14 overall in the 2024 MLB Draft.

Per MLB.com, Smith's 32 minor-league games played prior to his MLB call-up are the third-fewest by a position player since 1965, trailing former Rangers left fielder Pete Incaviglia and Blue Jays first baseman John Olerud. (h/t ESPN)

During his time in the minors, Smith slashed .313/.396/.609 with seven home runs and 16 total extra base hits. He had an excellent spring, slashing .342/.419/.711 with four home runs in 15 games.

The moment wasn't too big for Smith in his first major league at-bat, a promising development for Houston after watching Tucker and third baseman Alex Bregman, who signed with the Red Sox in free agency, leave during the offseason.

Both were instrumental to Houston's seven consecutive ALCS trips and two World Series wins from 2017-23. Smith could be vital to its next run.
