The Cleveland Browns will almost certainly add both a veteran quarterback and a rookie signal-caller to the roster at some point between the final weekend of March and the start of training camp practices.
During a recent appearance on the Browns Radio Network, star pass-rusher Myles Garrett addressed how an early-career pro and the organization can work together to achieve success.
"Any team that’s going to go far needs a quarterback and one that’s young, can learn and is willing to be patient with the process," Garrett explained, as shared by Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk. "There’s going to be some bumps in the road. It’s going to be some learning pains. But us as a team have to be able to be a landing pad for him, and know, being on the defensive side, help him out whenever things go wrong."
It currently seems unlikely because of the reported price associated with such a trade that the Browns will be able to move up from the second pick of the 2025 NFL Draft to the No. 1 spot so they can select Miami's Cam Ward. Ward is the consensus top quarterback in this year's draft class, and the perception exists that others who are part of what is widely considered to be a weak group will need to develop as backups through at least a portion of the upcoming season.
Cleveland reportedly could target Colorado's Shedeur Sanders at No. 2 or look to land Alabama's Jalen Milroe later in the draft. Milroe previously had Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees as his OC in college.
Many in the NFL community still believe Cleveland's Week 1 QB1 this coming September will be Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons as long as the Browns don't draft a quarterback in the first round on April 24. Cousins is looking to be traded or released because he lost his starting job to 2024 first-round draft pick Michael Penix Jr., and the veteran played under Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski when the two were with the Minnesota Vikings.
Garrett added that a young quarterback must have "some help not only in their room but from some of the veterans" on the roster. Browns general manager Andrew Berry is also hoping that Stefanski, a two-time NFL Coach of the Year Award winner who is an advertised offensive guru, can show by January 2026 that he can get the most out of a prospect after Berry and Stefanski gave up on Baker Mayfield following Mayfield's fourth season in the league.
