Novak Djokovic is one win away from historic milestone

Novak Djokovic has done it all in tennis, but even he had three items on his bucket list entering 2023: 1) capture an elusive Olympic gold medal, a record-setting 25th major and a 100th ATP Tour title.

The Serb knocked off one of the three with a win over Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 Paris Olympics final, which also gave him his 99th ATP title. However, he failed in his quest for the other two feats when he lost to Jannik Sinner in Shanghai and Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

Djokovic now has another opportunity to capture his 100th ATP title. On Friday, he demolished Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals of the Miami Open, setting up a final showdown against Jakub Mensik.

A win on Sunday will give Djokovic his 100th ATP title, seventh Miami Open title and first title since the Paris Olympics. After Friday's win, he didn't shy away from the fact that the milestone has been in the back of his mind for nearly a year.

“After the Olympics, which was my 99th title, I knew that every tournament I play I am going for 100. I wasn't able to achieve that — until hopefully Sunday," he said, via ATP Tour. "I am going to go all in. I haven't dropped a set. I'm playing really good tennis, as good as I've played in a long time."

It's hard to argue with the 24-time major winner. The 37-year-old has been in blistering form all season and looked on pace to reach the Australian Open final before being forced to retire in the semifinal with an injury. After an early exit at Indian Wells, Djokovic steamrolled his competition in Miami en route to Sunday's final.

If he completes the mission on Sunday, Djokovic will join Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103) as only the third player to reach the centenary mark of ATP titles. He still owns the best win/loss percentage ever among players who've played at least 30 tournaments.
