Injuries to key stars Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey have derailed the Philadelphia 76ers' season, but their absence has created opportunities for lesser-known players to step up. Quentin Grimes has been one such beneficiary, but another name emerging is Jalen Hood-Schifino.
After being traded from the Los Angeles Lakers and subsequently released by the Utah Jazz in February, Hood-Schifino has found a new home in Philadelphia, making the most of his opportunity.
The second-year guard, selected 17th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft, is averaging 9.3 points and 2.6 assists over eight games with the Sixers, delivering the best performances of his young career.
Following a career-high 19-point outing in a win over the Dallas Mavericks on Mar. 14, Hood-Schifino impressed again on Sunday night, posting 18 points and five assists in a loss to the Toronto Raptors. He was highly efficient, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line, while also contributing a steal and a block to showcase his all-around game.

Since signing a two-way contract with Philadelphia on Feb. 28, the 21-year-old has solidified his place on the NBA roster. Initially assigned to the Delaware Blue Coats, he quickly proved he was a level above the G League. Back-to-back 30-point performances and a stretch where he hit 12 three-pointers over three games prompted the Sixers to bring him up.
His offensive versatility, combined with his 6-foot-6 frame, makes him a tough matchup. It’s a continuation of what he previously displayed in the G League last season, where he averaged 22 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists over 15 games with the South Bay Lakers while shooting 43.2 percent from deep. The biggest obstacle to his development has been injuries, but now fully healthy, his skill set is on full display.
Even when available last season, Hood-Schifino struggled to crack the Lakers’ rotation as the team constantly retooled in pursuit of playoff success. Now, with Philadelphia’s season taking an unexpected turn, he’s getting valuable NBA minutes.
Whether his recent form earns him a full NBA contract remains to be seen, but Hood-Schifino is proving he can contribute at this level—whether with the Sixers or elsewhere.
