Watch: Alex Ovechkin scores goal No. 892, three from passing Wayne Gretzky

Three goals. That's all Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has left to score before he owns the NHL's all-time goals record.

"The Great Eight," as he's called, scored career tally No. 892 on Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes. He's now just three away from passing Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky (894).

Ovechkin whipped a one-timer from the left faceoff circle past goaltender Frederik Andersen during a five-on-three power play in the second period.

The 39-year-old has now tallied 39 goals this season in just 59 games played. He's now tied with Gordie Howe for the second-most scored by a player aged 39 or older in NHL history (44).

It was his third goal in as many games and his 323rd power-play tally, already an NHL record.

With seven games remaining in the regular season, Ovechkin is on pace to tie Gretzky's record on April 10 against the Hurricanes and pass him on April 12 at the Columbus Blue Jackets.
