Tale of two MVPs: How NBA history was altered on April 1

Any doubts about modern-day hoopers being more skilled than their predecessors were shut down on Tuesday night.

Nikola Jokic and Stephen Curry, winners of five of the last 10 MVP awards, proved why they're operating at a different skill level. While Curry had 52 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in the Warriors' 134-125 win over the Grizzlies, Jokic registered the highest-scoring 60-point triple-double ever in Denver's double OT loss to the Timberwolves.

The duo achieved a feat not attained in 62 years, becoming the first pair to each record 50-point double-doubles since Feb. 13, 1963. On that night, the Warriors' Wilt Chamberlain finished with 51 points, 29 rebounds and 11 assists, while the Lakers' Elgin Baylor had 50 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists against the Celtics.

Incidentally, Chamberlain's monster game didn't result in a win, much like Jokic's, and Baylor's did, precisely like Curry. The eeriness doesn't stop there. With his 31st triple-double of the season, Jokic tied Chamberlain's record for most ever by a center, and Curry surpassed "The Big Dipper" as the oldest player to record 50/10/8 in a game.

Curry and Jokic's performances remind us that while the sheer volume of Chamberlain's stats will never be toppled, modern-day players are more than capable of replicating some of his feats on any given night.

The pair of future Hall of Famers also became the first duo of ex-MVP winners to each score 50 or more points on the same night.

Former MVP Shaquille O'Neal took a minute to appreciate what Curry and Jokic pulled off on Tuesday night.

"As a kid, for me, this is what the NBA was all about — two great players stepping up and having super performances," O'Neal told "Inside the NBA" on TNT. "Great, great performances by two first ballot Hall of Famers. It was definitely a joy to watch them tonight."
