For a piece published Thursday, an unnamed NFL executive suggested to The Athletic's Mike Sando that it's now believed the New York Giants won't trade with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft and the right to take Miami's Cam Ward.
Thus, the Titans will be fine with selecting Ward at No. 1 on April 24.
"I don’t think the new Tennessee Titans brass sees much sense in hanging up the phone on anyone — you never know what someone will propose," NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared in his latest mailbag. "But, at this point, I think they’ve got a comfort level with Miami quarterback Cam Ward and how to build a team around him."
On Thursday evening, NFL Media's Cameron Wolfe expanded on the Titans' mindset during an appearance on NFL Network's "The Insiders" program.
"The Titans are in step three of their three-step process," Wolfe explained, per Paul Kasabian of Bleacher Report. "Their general manager Mike Borgonzi, Chad Brinker, their president [of football operations], they've been really clear of going through the process, and so, while one person described it to me as Cam Ward as the leader in the clubhouse for golf phrases, maybe he's three or four strokes up going into the final hole, there's no complete, final decision yet."
The Titans reportedly want three first-round draft picks "or something of that value" in return for the top choice. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Browns seem ready to grab either Penn State pass-rusher Abdul Carter or Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter at No. 2. Recent reports have said the Giants will hold onto the third pick and select Carter, Hunter or Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
For his mock draft posted on Wednesday, ESPN's Field Yates wrote that "absent a 'Godfather'-style trade offer — one the Titans cannot refuse — I fully expect Tennessee to take Ward and build this franchise around him." As of April 4, no team has made such an offer to the Titans.
"I also think there’s a nuance to how they’ve handled the past month, drilling down on the four guys they have at the top, with Penn State’s Abdul Carter, and Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders joining Ward in the group," Breer said about the Titans. "Essentially, as I see it, that may be a tell that even if they were willing to drop down from the No. 1 pick, they wouldn’t be looking to go far, mostly because of the makeup of the draft class."
Breer added that he doesn't "see the Titans moving" off the first pick over the next several weeks. Ultimately, any alleged drama regarding how the Titans will handle the draft's top asset may only be for show.
