Just one player so far has decided to come to Duke via the transfer portal this offseason. That player is former Washington State wing Cedric Coward, who recently committed to Duke after taking an official visit.
Coward is a major get for head coach Jon Scheyer and the Blue Devils, but his commitment comes with a caveat. Alongside entering the transfer portal this offseason, he also entered his name in the 2025 NBA Draft.
Coward committed to Duke as a transfer player, but he's still looking at his options as far as the NBA is concerned. In that sense, Duke has no guarantees just yet that he'll be on the roster next season. He also has no timeline as to when that decision will come despite the fact that he just committed to the Blue Devils.
“There’s no set timetable on when the decision is going to be made but, as I gain more information, as I talk to the people close, close to me and that have the information in order for me to make that decision, and as I talk more to Coach Scheyer and the staff, we’ll come to a decision on what’s best for me," Coward told "The Field of 68" (h/t On3).
The draft is on June 25, so something is going to have to give here in the next two months. Coward relayed that he wants to make an informed decision, but he seemed rather pleased that Scheyer and the Blue Devils are giving him a chance to let it play out. That likely played a role in his decision to transfer to Duke.
"Something with Coach Scheyer and the staff that really, I really respected is that they respected my choices in terms of, like, still going along with this,” Coward explained.
If Coward stays at Duke, he'll likely be one of the top players in the nation. As a junior at WSU last season, he averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
Notably, ESPN ranks Coward as the 52nd best prospect in the 2025 NBA Draft. One would imagine a great year at Duke in 2025 could help raise his profile, but it remains to be seen what he decides to do.

Everyone already knows Purdue's ultimate goals for the 2025-26 college basketball season: winning a Big Ten title and returning to the Final Four. But how can the Boilermakers accomplish those tasks? While coach Matt Painter knows his squad needs to improve defensively, the goal is to have the top offensive team in the country. Purdue has emerged as a fast-paced, highly-offensive team in college basketball, trying to push the tempo and create a lot of possessions. Last year, the Boilers had one of the most efficient teams offensively in the country, highlighted by the play of Braden Smith, Trey Kaufman-Renn, and Fletcher Loyer. Heading into the 2025-26, Painter hopes that Purdue can have the best offensive team in the country, while also improving defensively and in the rebounding department. "We were the seventh-best offensive team in the country (last year). The year before, with Zach (Edey), we were the fourth-best offensive team in the country," Painter told A Star Struck Podcast. "That's our goal for next year, to be the best offensive team in the country." Purdue was led by Kaufman-Renn, who ended the year with 292 made field goals, the most in college basketball. He averaged 20.1 points per game. Loyer had one of the top three-point percentages in the country, shooting 44.4% from distance. Smith dished out 313 assists, which ranked second nationally. Painter knows what he has with those three senior leaders. Leading into the season, the task is getting new additions like Oscar Cluff, Liam Murphy, Omer Mayer, and Antione West Jr. up to speed so they can help the Boilermakers become even more dynamic offensively. That's something that begins way before the start of fall practices in West Lafayette. "Our stuff starts in the summer ... we want to have a foundation of how we do things and what we do and how we go about it," Painter said. "But we're also going to make our hard work fun. Our stuff is not a boot camp at all."
The Miami Marlins achieved a franchise first on Sunday. In doing so, they carved out an interesting place in MLB history. With a 7-3 victory over the Yankees, the Marlins swept New York for the first time in a series of three or more games. In doing so, the Marlins became the only team to have a winning record, including the postseason, against the Yankees. The Yankees now have a 22-21 record against the Marlins in the regular season. However, the Marlins won the 2003 World Series against the Yankees in six games, giving the Fish a 25-24 record all-time. The Marlins' victory on Sunday meant more than a unique place in baseball history. That victory evened the Marlins' record at 55-55, the first time they have been at .500 or better since April 15 (8-8). The Marlins are 30-14 in their last 44 games, tying the 2003 championship team for the best stretch (last done from June 18-Aug. 9) in franchise history. The Marlins defied expectations at the trade deadline, holding on to pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera. Their only trade involved sending outfielder Jesus Sanchez to Houston, acquiring pitcher Ryan Gusto and a pair of prospects. Expectations were that the Marlins were simply waiting for the offseason to trade those pitchers, as there may be a larger market. Instead, the generally inexperienced Marlins roster is growing and improving by the day. They have clawed back from a 24-40 start to the season to pull themselves into the NL wild-card conversation. Although a lot would need to go right for the Marlins to reach the playoffs this season, they could be a dangerous team over the rest of the season and beyond. The Yankees found that out the hard way.
The Denver Broncos haven't won a playoff game since Super Bowl 50. Head coach Sean Payton expects that to change in 2025. Payton won a Super Bowl as New Orleans Saints HC during the 2009 season. He says the 2025 Broncos could do the same. "The short-term goal is winning the division," Payton told Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson in a story published Sunday. "But this is a team capable of winning the Super Bowl. I've coached six teams that I thought could win the Super Bowl. Some went to championship games, some went to the playoffs. This is my seventh team that I think has that." After losing to the Buffalo Bills 31-7 in the AFC wild-card round last season, the Broncos splurged in free agency. They signed tight end Evan Engram, safety Talanoa Hufanga, linebacker Dre Greenlaw and running back J.K. Dobbins. Greenlaw and Hufanga helped the San Francisco 49ers reach Super Bowl LVIII during the 2023 season. Many of Denver's stars are also returning, including cornerback Patrick Surtain II and quarterback Bo Nix. The second-year passer tossed the league's sixth-most touchdown passes (29 in 17 starts) during his rookie season. Payton thinks that's just a taste of what's to come. "[Nix is] going to be one of the top four or five quarterbacks in the league in the next two years," the coach said. "That's what we're seeing right now. He doesn't take sacks. He's got exceptional arm strength. ... He threw the longest ball — [67] air yards against [the Cincinnati Bengals]. He can run. He can throw in funny body angles." Before placing your bets on Denver, remember it's in the AFC West, which features the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs have made three straight Super Bowl appearances, winning two. Denver's talent could help it compete with Kansas City. In a story published July 21, ESPN's Mike Clay, Aaron Schatz and Seth Walder listed the Broncos' projected starting lineup as the NFL's sixth best. The Chiefs, meanwhile, ranked No. 5. It seems Payton isn't overhyping his team, which could be a Super Bowl sleeper.
Happy 76th birthday to Super Bowl XVII champion and MVP, Hall-of-Famer and Washington Commanders legend John "Diesel," Riggins! Riggins was a force in the Washington backfield for nine seasons, carrying the ball 1,988 times for 7,472 yards and 79 touchdowns. Despite playing just eight games in the 1982 regular season, he still managed to lead the NFL with 177 carries with another 136 coming in the run the Super Bowl title. He followed that effort up by leading the NFL in rushing touchdowns in 1983 (24) and 1984 (14).
