MLB world mourns former pitcher Octavio Dotel, who died in nightclub roof collapse

A terrible incident happened early on Tuesday morning in the Dominican Republic that has claimed the lives of many, including former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel.

It's being reported by ESPN that Dotel was among the at least 66 people who died on Tuesday morning when the roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo during a concert.

"Dotel was taken to one of the designated hospitals. On the way there, his condition worsened and he died," Dominican National Police spokesperson Diego Pesqueira said, per ESPN.

As of early Tuesday evening ABC News is reporting that at least 66 people have died and 155 others were injured because of the roof collapse. At the time of that report, a search-and-rescue operation was still underway.

Monte Cristi governor Nelsy Milagros Cruz Martinez was also killed in the incident. Notably, she is the sister of seven-time MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz.

Dotel had a long MLB career that spanned from 1999 to 2013. He played for the New York Mets, Houston Astros, Athletics, New York Yankees, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, Colorado Rockies, Toronto Blue Jays, St. Louis Cardinals and Detroit Tigers.

The Mets, who drafted him, released a statement and held a moment of silence in Dotel's honor:

He was a part of a combined no-hitter in 2003 as a member of the Astros. The team they no-hit was the Yankees. Both clubs released a statement on his death.

Dotel helped the Cardinals win the World Series in 2011. They also reacted to the news:

In 15 years in the majors, he notched 109 career saves with a 3.78 ERA.

Dotel was 51 years old.
