Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger recently took on chicken wings, and the chicken wings won.
On Wednesday, Bellinger spoke with reporters after he was scratched from Tuesday's lineup after waking up in the middle of the night with a nasty bout of food poisoning.
The culprit? Room-service chicken wings.
"They were good coming in," Bellinger said, per ESPN. "But I woke up at 4 a.m. sweating and just started throwing up for a few hours," he added. "It was a rough morning."
Bellinger shared a positive update, telling reporters, "I feel good today" before the final game in a three-game road set against the Tigers (7-4). "I slept a ton last night," he continued. "I'm just hydrating and getting ready to play."
As a result of the unfortunate episode, Bellinger shared that he has no plans to eat chicken wings for the foreseeable future.
"I can say I will not eat wings for five years," he said. "Because the thought of it right now makes me sick."
Bellinger is in his first season with the Yankees (6-5) after being traded by the Cubs on December 17, 2024.
The 2019 NL MVP with the Dodgers spent his first six seasons in Los Angeles (2017-22) before signing in Chicago as a 2022 free agent.
Through his first eight games in Yankees pinstripes, Bellinger has a .233/.278/.333 slash line in 30 at-bats, hitting one home run with six runs batted in.
He might have still felt the effects of his food poisoning in his first game back. In his first four at-bats Wednesday, Bellinger was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a foul out to third.
