The Jacksonville Jaguars don't technically need franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence to suit up until the fall of 2025, but every rep in the spring and summer matters for a player coming off a major injury.
Lawrence's rehab from surgery to repair the AC joint in his left shoulder will be watched like a hawk down in Jacksonville. That's the good news. There will be no surprises, and he is expected to be ready by training camp.
In the meantime, though, it may feel like a case of learning to crawl before you can walk for Lawrence, who will be on a "pitch count" this spring, per new head coach Liam Coen.
"As we lead in, we're optimistic that we'll get there in terms of where we need to go," Coen said on Wednesday, according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "He'll be on a pitch count for those things. In terms of the where he has to get to, because he has little touch points he needs to reach before he can obviously get out onto the grass and do it full speed, everything's moving forward. He feels really good right now, so excited about that."
The AC joint was injured on his non-throwing shoulder, so that's also obviously good news for the Jaguars. There's no doubting the fact that 2024 was rough for Lawrence, though.
He suffered the injury in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles, which caused him to miss the next two games. When he did get back on the field, in Week 13 against the Houston Texans, he was knocked out of the game with a concussion late in the first half. The Jaguars placed him on the IR, which effectively ended his season.
Now it's up to Lawrence and the Jaguars' training staff to make sure he can come back fully healthy for 2025. Lawrence had the surgery on December 17 and though he has no deadline to be completely cleared, he seems to be confident that he'll be good to go when it matters.
"We don't play a game until this fall, so obviously I'm going to be ready sooner than that, so I'm very optimistic I'll be perfectly good for the season," Lawrence said. "... I'm throwing, and obviously I'm kind of progressing and working my way up further distance, more throws, just trying to be smart and not just jump off into the deep end right away. Just trying to work up to it."
