Illinois lands former five-star recruit and son of former NBA star via transfer portal
Illinois has picked up a very interesting player via the transfer portal. Andrej Stojakovic, son of former NBA player Peja Stojakovic, has committed to head coach Brad Underwood and the Fighting Illini.
This was announced by Stojakovic himself on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

This is a massive recruiting win for Underwood and Illinois. Not only does Stojakovic have NBA basketball in his blood, but he proved last season at California that he can get the job done.
Stojakovic averaged 17.9 points per game for the Golden Bears to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 blocks per game. He started in 28 of 29 games played for Cal, so he's bringing a ton of experience to Illinois with him, alongside two more years of eligibility remaining.
A former five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American, Stojakovic committed to Stanford out of high school. He played in 32 games as a freshman for the Cardinal and, like his dad, was good from three-point range. He made 34 that season, which ranked 10th in school history for threes made by a freshman.
As a sophomore at Cal, he scored 20-plus points in 13 games and notched a career-high 37 points in the ACC Tournament against his old school, Stanford. He was an All-ACC Team honorable mention at the end of the regular season and part of the ACC All-Tournament First Team.
Stojakovic projects to be a part of what Illinois wants to do next season, and he should ultimately find himself in the NBA once his college career is said and done.

Tua Tagovailoa Doesn't Hold Back After Dolphins 'Embarrassed' By Lions
The Miami Dolphins have struggled through training camp and the first preseason game, but may have hit a new low in Wednesday's joint practice with the Detroit Lions. Reporters watching practice noted that Detroit outclassed the Dolphins on both offense and defense, with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa struggling with timing and mistakes against the aggressive Lions' secondary. Speaking to reporters after practice, Tagovailoa refused to give himself a grade but admitted that his team was frustrated against the NFC Super Bowl contenders. "For a grade, I wouldn't give myself a grade," Tagovailoa said, via NFL.com. "I don't think that's fair to grade yourself. "My assessment -- I still wouldn't give myself a grade. I think that's for you guys to do with however you guys report that and whatnot. I think today offensively was a very frustrating day in regards to what we wanted to do, what we said we wanted to do. Came out and we just weren't able to get things jumpstarted, so that was very frustrating today." Tagovailoa is coming off a season where he appeared in just 11 games, completing 72.9% of his passes for 2,867 yards with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Dolphins Struggled in 'Lopsided' Practice Chris Cwik of Yahoo Sports noted that the Dolphins were "embarrassed" by the Lions in Wednesday's practice, which came after Miami already stumbled through mistakes in their preseason opener against the Chicago Bears. The Athletic's Colton Pouncy had an even more brutal assessment, calling it one of the worst performances he had seen from a team. "That was the most lopsided joint practice I’ve ever seen. Lions dominated both sides," Pouncy shared in a post on X. The practice may not bode well for Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, who dropped to 8-9 last season and return to a division with Super Bowl contending Buffalo Bills and a rising New England Patriots team.

Browns' Shedeur Sanders could be losing valuable opportunity after injury update
Just when it seemed everything was going right for Shedeur Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback caught an unlucky break on Wednesday. The 23-year-old QB was sidelined during Wednesday's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles after suffering an oblique injury. Per Kelsey Russo of the team website, the 2025 fifth-round pick won't practice Thursday and is considered day-to-day. He is deemed unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason game against Philadelphia, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network. Before Wednesday's practice, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed rookie QB Dillon Gabriel will start against Philadelphia as long as he's healthy enough to play. The 2025 third-rounder missed Cleveland's preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers because of a hamstring issue. However, Stefanski previously said Sanders would get more reps this week after a solid preseason debut. The former Colorado Buffaloes star received the start in the 30-10 win over Carolina, going 14-of-23 passing for 138 yards and two touchdown passes. Not playing against Philadelphia could disrupt Sanders' momentum. More importantly, it may eliminate another opportunity for him to overtake Gabriel in Cleveland's four-way QB competition. Sanders is listed as the Browns QB4 behind Gabriel, Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco on the team's unofficial depth chart. Despite questions about Gabriel's size (5-foot-11, 205 pounds), the coaching staff seems to favor him over Sanders. Earlier this offseason, Gabriel's processing speed reportedly impressed Browns coaches, giving him an edge over Sanders. The former Oregon Ducks star also received reps with the first-team offense during OTAs and mandatory minicamp, while his fellow rookie didn't. If Gabriel plays well against the Eagles, that would continue to affirm the coaching staff's confidence in the 24-year-old QB. Neither Sanders nor Gabriel is expected to be the Week 1 starter for the Browns. It's likely going to be Flacco, who helped Cleveland make the playoffs in 2023 when he went 4-1 during a late-season stretch. Still, another solid preseason showing could help Sanders position himself to replace 40-year-old Flacco in the future. With the setback, it may take more time to climb the depth chart.

Smart averaged 9.0 points per game, shooting 44.0 percent from the field. Now with the Lakers, he has a little more to fight for, playing for a team in the spotlight who have their sights set on achieving a top playoff seed.
