Fred Couples is making his 40th appearance at the Masters this week, and the 65-year-old wasted no time proving that he still belongs in the field.
Couples submitted an entry for best shot of the 2025 Masters during the first round on Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga. Couples had a 191-yard approach shot at the par-4 14th hole, and he decided there was no need to take his putter out of the bag.
Using a hybrid, Couples hit a perfect shot that landed on the green and rolled directly into the hole. Couples was asking for the ball to “get up,” and it listened.

Younger players probably would have used a 7- or an 8-iron for that shot, but Couples proved that being a long-hitter isn’t everything.
That was not the only highlight of the day from Couples. The 1992 Masters champion got off to a hot start when he chipped in for birdie on the par-4 1st hole.

Masters champions have a lifetime invitation to play in the tournament. Couples has missed the cut five out of the past six years, but he certainly is not embarrassing himself out there. His opening round on Thursday was a reminder that he can still hold his own.
