Watch: Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz hits grand slam on bobblehead night

Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz was honored with his own bobblehead on Saturday night, and he marked the occasion in the best way imaginable.

In the bottom of the third against the Pittsburgh Pirates, De La Cruz hit a grand slam, giving the Reds a 4-0 lead.

De La Cruz drilled the 89 mph full-count four-seam fastball 388 yards to left field for his third home run of the season and second grand slam of his young career.

The 2024 All-Star made his MLB debut on June 6, 2023, and he hit his first grand slam last September in Minnesota against the Twins. (h/t Stathead)

Early this season, De La Cruz capitalized on his plate appearances with the bases loaded, going 4-for-4 with three extra-base hits and 10 runs batted in.

Per Baseball Savant, De La Cruz's grand slam had an exit velocity of 107.8 mph and would have been a home run in all 30 major league ballparks.

It just so happened to come in the one holding a De La Cruz bobblehead night.

Video posted to social media showed massive lines of fans waiting to purchase the prized De La Cruz bobblehead, which might have become even more valuable with his grand slam.

Teams might want to load their schedules with bobblehead giveaways. It's becoming something of a good luck charm.

In early April, Dodgers designated hitter and three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani hit a walk-off home run the same night the team gave fans Ohtani bobblehead figurines.

On Friday, Dodgers first baseman returned from a stint on the injured list (sprained ankle) in time for his own bobblehead celebration.

De La Cruz was the most recent beneficiary of bobblehead's good fortune, and with stars including Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich and Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge among those scheduled to receive their own in the coming months, chances are he won't be the last.

Phillies superstar may be building Hall of Fame case

Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber is in the midst of another impressive season. Schwarber entered Wednesday having posted a .249/.373/.578 batting line in his 528 plate appearances this season, hitting 42 homers while driving in a National League-leading 97 runs. The Phillies slugger was named to his third All-Star Game this season and, according to NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, he should be the NL MVP. Schwarber has been one of baseball's premier power hitters since establishing himself in the majors in 2017. He's in his eighth season of hitting 30 or more homers and has reached the 40-homer plateau three times in his four seasons in Philadelphia. The 32-year-old Schwarber may find himself in elite company when his career comes to an end. He has already hit 326 homers in his career, potentially giving him a chance to reach the 500-home run plateau. If Schwarber does hit 500-plus homers, the narrative around his career may change. There have only been 28 players in MLB history to reach that plateau, 19 of whom are in the Hall of Fame. Two players — Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera — are not yet eligible and are expected to be enshrined on the first ballot. The seven players who have not been inducted into the Hall of Fame have been linked to PED use, torpedoing their candidacy. At the same time, his entire candidacy may be based on his home run total. Schwarber has a lifetime .232/.346/.499 batting line over 5,188 plate appearances; although batting average no longer carries much weight for the voters, he would have the lowest batting average of any non-pitcher in the Hall. His 20.7 fWAR has been dragged down by his defense and is unlikely to make him a favorite among the younger voters who put more emphasis on such metrics. Schwarber is marching toward the 500-home run plateau. If he does reach that mark, he could be a polarizing Hall of Fame candidate.

Oregon suspends former five-star WR recruit indefinitely

Oregon wide receiver Jurrion Dickey has struggled to live up to expectations in his first two seasons with the Ducks, and he is now in a terrible position heading into 2025 as well. Dickey has been suspended indefinitely by Oregon, head coach Dan Lanning announced on Tuesday. Lanning also suggested that Dickey may not play for the Ducks again. "We have two team rules; that’s respectful, be on time,” Lanning said, via James Crepea of The Oregonian. “There’s some pieces of that where I felt like he needed a break from us and we needed a break from that so we could focus on what’s in front of us right now. "Wishing him nothing but the best, as far as success and want to see him get back to where he can be a contributor somewhere; that might be here that might be somewhere else.” Dickey was a five-star recruit and rated as one of the top wide receivers in the country when he came out of Menlo-Atherton High School in Atherton, California, in 2023. He suffered an injury in his senior year in high school and redshirted as a freshman at Oregon. Dickey has two catches for 14 years during his time with the Ducks. Oregon went 13-1 in Lanning's third season with the program last season. The Ducks lost to eventual national champion Ohio State in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

Steelers Considering Cutting Ties With Former Fan Favorite Prospect

The Pittsburgh Steelers finally ended training camp in Latrobe, PA and headed back to Pittsburgh on Tuesday in preparation for a joint practice (and preseason game) with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Thankfully, the Steelers are leaving Latrobe without too many injury concerns. The most notable is likely Calvin Austin III, who has missed nearly two weeks of practices due to an injury, while other players have suffered minor setbacks that have already returned to the practice field. One player who has also missed considerable time is cornerback Cory Trice Jr., who went down with a hamstring injury. Trice was a seventh-round pick for the Steelers during the 2023 NFL Draft. Some believed he deserved to go higher in the draft, but he had injury concerns entering his professional career, and those concerns proved to come true. The young defender missed his entire rookie season in 2023 with a torn ACL, and he was only able to appear in six games in 2024 while battling a hamstring issue. Team insider Mark Kaboly had Trice listed as a "loser" of training camp due to his injury, even speculating that he might not be with Pittsburgh in the near future. "Trice is uber talented, but he just can’t stay healthy," Kaboly wrote. "At what point do the Steelers cut ties with him because of him being unreliable? It is getting close to that point in time." The defensive back has only been available in six games over the first two seasons of his career, but the coaching staff has remained excited about what he could become. However, there comes a time when the injuries just become too much, and Kaboly believes the Steelers might be at that point. The severity of Trice's hamstring injury has not been stated publicly, but he needs to get back on the field soon in order to stay on the roster. The injury isn't the only thing that is going against Trice. Pittsburgh also revamped the cornerback group during the 2025 offseason, which included bringing in high-end talent like Jalen Ramsey and Darius Slay. Pittsburgh also signed Brandin Echols, who is competing with Beanie Bishop Jr. at slot cornerback in certain packages. The room is packed with talent, and Trice was going to have to have a good camp to make it onto the final roster. He can still do that, but he needs to find a way to get back on the field soon. By this point in his career, the hope was that Trice would be a consistent contributor to the Pittsburgh defense. He and Joey Porter Jr. were drafted in the same year, and some fans believed they had what it took to be the two starting cornerbacks in Pittsburgh for years to come, but the injuries have not allowed that to happen up to this point. Porter has turned into a solid starter with a ton of potential, but Trice is still waiting in the wings. Steelers' Cory Trice Jr. Just Needs More Experience Trice has shown some flashes when he has been able to get onto the field for Pittsburgh. He had the game-sealing interception against the Denver Broncos at the beginning of the 2024 season, but he suffered his hamstring injury during the next game. He was put on an island against Ja'Marr Chase at the end of the 2024 season, and he got beat pretty bad. He likely learned some lessons from that matchup and was going to come back even stronger in 2025, but fans are going to have to wait and see if he can get back on the field for the Steelers.

Taylor Swift went bonkers when Chiefs selected speedy WR in 2024

When Taylor Swift started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in 2023, she knew little about football. Now, the pop star is obsessed with the sport. She tracks who the Chiefs select in the NFL Draft. During her Wednesday debut on Kelce's podcast, "New Heights," Swift recalled going bonkers when Kansas City selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy with pick No. 28 in the 2024 draft. "Oh my god, I fell in love with [football]," Swift said. "I became obsessed with it. I became a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, 'We drafted Xavier Worthy.' And my friends were like. 'Who's body snatched you? What do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?' I was screeching. I couldn't believe it." Kelce said Swift was the first person to tell him the Chiefs selected Worthy, who set a 40-yard dash record (4.21 seconds) at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "You were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft," he said. "I couldn't believe it either. I was like, 'Is she right?' I'm gonna have to look this up. Did she get the wrong information here?' But, yeah, we traded up [from pick No. 32 with the Buffalo Bills]." Along with monitoring the Chiefs' drafts, Swift has learned more about the sport's various pass coverages and rules. The 14-time Grammy winner admitted she thought all offensive players played at the same time and didn't know what a first down was before she started dating Kelce. "We're talking about Cover 2, Cover 4, Cover 0, man coverage," she said. "I'm not ready to be an analyst right now, but give me 16 months." Perhaps one of the league's broadcast crews will let Swift make a brief appearance in the booth when she attends one of Kelce's games. Worthy, meanwhile, could continue to showcase why he made Swift ecstatic on draft night. In his rookie season, he had 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdown catches in 17 games. With the Chiefs expanding his role this season, he could be in for a more productive year.
