Masters win sets Rory McIlroy up for historic season

At long last, Rory McIlroy has secured the coveted green jacket to become just the sixth golfer ever to complete the career Grand Slam. Now that the immense weight of winning the Masters has been lifted off his shoulders, McIlroy might just go on a major championship tear in 2025.

There's no question that McIlroy is the best player in the world right now. The Northern Irishman already has three wins this season, and they've come at Pebble Beach Golf Links, TPC Sawgrass and Augusta National Golf Club. Not too shabby.

As for the rest of the major championship venues this year, it's as if McIlroy hand-picked them to give himself the best opportunities to end his major drought.

Next is the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club, one of McIlroy's favorite courses on the PGA Tour. In 13 career starts at Quail Hollow, he's won four times and recorded nine top-10 finishes. It was also the site of his first career PGA Tour victory in 2010, so this course holds a special place in McIlroy's heart.

In June, McIlroy will head to Pittsburgh for the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, a brutally long course that emphasizes total driving and long-iron play. Sound like anyone in particular? Modern U.S. Open courses are perfect for McIlroy's game, and Oakmont is no exception.

We haven't even gotten to the best part yet. McIlroy will return to Northern Ireland for the Open Championship at Royal Portrush to round out the major championship season. He grew up playing the golf course and shot a course-record 61 there when he was just 16 years old. McIlroy missed the cut the last time Royal Portrush hosted a major in 2019, but this is a different, more mentally strong player than the one we saw six years ago.

This is a dream major schedule for McIlroy, who is playing some of the best golf of his life at 35. He should love his chances of picking up at least one more major in 2025. With how he plays and the friendly schedule ahead, McIlroy has a unique opportunity to join Bobby Jones (1930) as the only golfer to win all four majors in the same year.
