The Chicago Sky selected four new players in the 2025 WNBA Draft, including two in the first round. Not only did they pair up TCU guard Hailey Van Lith and Slovenian forward Ajša Sivka, but they added Notre Dame forward Maddy Westbeld in the second round.
In her five-year college career with the Fighting Irish, Westbeld landed on the All-ACC team on three occasions and averaged 11 or more points in her first four seasons. However, she had a shortened senior year at Notre Dame, only contributing 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest in just 21 games, which caused her to fall to the second round.
As a 6-foot-3 forward, Westbeld will have to compete for rotation minutes behind Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, both of whom shined for Chicago last season as rookies. Westbeld is confident in her approach, however, and she put Reese and the team on notice just after being drafted.
"I'm so excited to be able to compete with Angel every day," Westbeld said. "I'm just excited to be able to compete with the best, really prove who I am, really prove the fact that I deserve to be in this league and I made it to this point. I'm excited to put people on notice."

General manager Jeff Pagliocca felt that Westbeld was a worthy selection in the second round because she averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest in her last healthy season. Her older sister, Kathryn, was also just signed to a training camp contract with the Phoenix Mercury last month, so she has a strong basketball pedigree.
Reese was named an All-Star last season after scoring 13.6 points per game and leading the league with 13.1 rebounds per contest. She also landed on the All-Rookie team and finished second in Rookie of the Year Award voting, so it will be tough for Westbeld to compete with her for minutes. If she can make the final roster, then Westbeld and the Sky will be in action for the first time against the Indiana Fever on May 17.
