Report: Pelicans ownership furious about latest Zion Williamson drama

The New Orleans Pelicans have been through a lot over the last six years with Zion Williamson, and now they may have finally reached their breaking point.

Shamit Dua of WDSU in New Orleans reported this week that Pelicans ownership is “livid” about their star player Williamson’s latest bout of off-court drama. Dua further writes that the event has been described as “the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Last week, the news broke that a woman was arrested after an incident at Williamson’s home in which allegedly she attacked a rival woman who was also romantically linked with Williamson. The woman has since been charged with aggravated battery, home invasion, and stalking (full details here).

It is far from the first time that Williamson’s personal life has made headlines. Most notably in 2023, Williamson was also threatened by another woman, an adult film star, after a drama-filled relationship between the two of them.

Even when it comes to just Williamson’s relationship with the Pelicans organization, there have also been too many issues to count on that front. In addition to his well-documented diet, conditioning, and durability issues in years past, Williamson was suspended by New Orleans earlier this year for violating team policies, and he then took a public swipe at the team over their handling of his health.

The former No. 1 overall pick Williamson has three more years and roughly $126 million left on his contract with the Pelicans (though that number is deceiving because it comes with plenty of team-friendly protections). With New Orleans, who went a dismal 21-61 this season, recently moving to fire lead executive David Griffin in favor of a notable name, both Williamson and head coach Willie Green could potentially be the next ones to go.
