One of the biggest rumors of the ongoing NFL offseason has involved the perception that free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers hasn't yet signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers for one reason.
The supposed reason? He truly wants to join a Minnesota Vikings team that will spend the spring evaluating where 2024 first-round draft pick J.J. McCarthy is in his recovery from the full meniscus repair that cost him his rookie season.
During a Thursday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," Rodgers insisted that suggestions indicating he's waiting to hear back from the Vikings are inaccurate. The future Hall of Famer is close with Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, and it's no secret the two have talked since Rodgers took his last meaningful in-game snap as a member of the New York Jets this past January:
Aaron Rodgers says that the reports of him “pitching something to the #Vikings” and “waiting around for the Vikings” are inaccurate. Rodgers did say he and Kevin O’Connell keep in touch outside of football.

"I'm in a different phase of my life," Rodgers said, as shared by Alex Kozora of Steelers Depot. "I'm 41 years old. I'm in a serious relationship. I have off-the-field stuff going on that requires my attention. ...I have a couple people in my inner, inner circle who are battling some quite difficult stuff."
While the Vikings are set to begin their springtime workouts on the Monday after Easter with McCarthy atop the depth chart, it's believed O'Connell could reach out to Rodgers if the 22-year-old fails to impress through Minnesota's final mandatory minicamp practice. During Thursday's show appearance, Rodgers interestingly did not slam the door shut on possibly signing with the Steelers or Vikings at some point:

- He never wanted $30M-$40M. Told teams he’d play for $10M.

Aaron Rodgers to @PatMcAfeeShow on the #Steelers: "Listen, this entire time I haven’t felt like I owed somebody any decision at some point. ... I’ve been upfront with them about that. If you need to move on, call me, by all means. ... There’s been no deadline. And yeah, I’ve…

Asked if it feels like if he plays, it'll be with the #Steelers, Rodgers says: "I am trying to be open to everything and not specifically attached to anything when it comes to this decision. I’m not holding anybody hostage – I really want to emphasize that. … I’m just going…

Regardless of Rodgers' status, the Steelers are widely expected to grab at least one quarterback during the draft that gets underway on April 24. Pittsburgh may or may not target Alabama's Jalen Milroe if neither Colorado's Shedeur Sanders nor Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart is on the board when the Steelers are called to spend the draft's 21st pick.
Does the NFL Draft affect anything with Aaron Rodgers?
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 17, 2025
"Oh, no," Rodgers says on @PatMcAfeeShow.
In other words, if the #Steelers draft a QB, it won't alter anything.
As of the third Thursday of April, the Steelers would have to start either longtime backup Mason Rudolph, 2022 seventh-round draft pick Skylar Thompson or a rookie at quarterback. The good news for Pittsburgh fans hoping they'll be able to cheer for Rodgers as their team's QB1 is that he sounds open to joining the club, perhaps after mandatory minicamp practices wrap up in June.
That said, it's still unknown if Rodgers could choose the New Orleans Saints over the Steelers. Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr is dealing with a shoulder injury that could cause him to miss part or all of the 2025 season, but New Orleans could spend a first-round draft pick on a potential Carr replacement next Thursday night.
