The Texas Longhorns locked up a notable player via the transfer portal on Friday.
Texas has secured a commitment from former Cal Golden Bears tight end Jack Endries. Endries was the Golden Bears’ leading receiver last season. He had 56 catches for 623 yards and 2 touchdowns during his redshirt sophomore season. Both the amount of catches and yards led Cal.
Former Cal TE Jack Endries has signed with Texas, per an ESPN source. He was Cal’s leading receiver last year and considered a top portal tight end. This position was a need for Texas, and they’ve addressed it with a productive veteran. https://t.co/0Wx7LRD2Dw

Not only did Cal lose Endries, but they also lost quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who transferred to Indiana after last season. They have a lot of quality players to replace.
Texas is coming off a 13-3 season that saw them reach the College Football Playoff for the second year in a row. Their tight end Gunnar Helm had 60 catches for 786 yards and 7 touchdowns, so Endries should step in to fill that role. In addition to Helm, the Longhorns are losing Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond and Silas Bolden to the NFL Draft. Endries should be able to step in and produce right away for Texas.
By making the move from Cal to Texas, Endries will be going from the ACC to the SEC. It wasn’t that long ago where such a transfer would have meant going from the Pac-12 to the Big 12.

The quarterback battle for Notre Dame is set to come to an end shortly, and it might be a surprise considering how the national media predicted the race to finish. Per Eric Hansen of On3, head coach Marcus Freeman is set to name the starting quarterback by Sunday when he meets the media. The Irish are still letting the quarterback battle play out until then, but it appears sophomore quarterback Kenny Minchey is the favorite to start at Hard Rock Stadium against the Miami Hurricanes on Aug. 31. Minchey has shown improvement in numerous areas throughout camp, and he has the edge on freshman quarterback CJ Carr in what is believed to be the final week of the competition. "As of Wednesday, the line between 1 and 2 remained blurred," Hansen wrote. "The tiebreaker may eventually go to Minchey, per the source, because of his ability to be a true running threat and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock’s preference to have that element to put pressure on opposing defenses. "But he also has a preference for QBs who can transcend adversity, and the training camp phase was choreographed to test precisely that. While both contenders responded persistently in a manner that defies their inexperience, Minchey has been exceptional in that regard." Throughout the summer, ESPN writers such as Bill Connelly and Mark Schlabach have written as though it were a forgone conclusion that Carr would win the battle in training camp. However, Minchey appears to be a natural fit for how offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to scheme against a defense. He helped dual-threat Jayden Daniels earn a Heisman Trophy in 2023 and took Notre Dame to a national championship appearance with Riley Leonard. The battle isn't over, but the edge appears to be running Minchey's way.
The Detroit Lions led the NFL in points per game (33.2), total points (564) and were second in yards per game and total yards last season. Their core offensive players will all be back, but offensive coordinator Ben Johnson won't. Of course, it will take some time to adjust to life without one of the most creative offensive architects in the game. And according to star WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, they're still not quite there yet. "We feel like as an offense maybe this camp there has been some struggles for us as an offense," St. Brown told the team's website. "But I think that's normal. You got new coaches and different moving parts and you're going against a really good defense every day." Then again, with the myriad of offensive weapons they have, the All-Pro wide receiver still thinks they can do something special. "Things can get tough. But for us as an offense, we know the ability that we have, the playmakers we have, the quarterback we have, the O-line, so it's just a matter of time for us. Keep getting better and improving is the name of the game for us right now," St. Brown added. The Lions lost both of their primary assistants to head-coaching positions this offseason. Still, this team should continue to boast the same aggressive, all-in identity that head coach Dan Campbell has instilled. And with weapons like St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta, it shouldn't take long before they pick up things right where they left them last season.
Defense ruled the day during the joint practice between the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings. Per Chad Graff of The Athletic, the Patriots defense did a masterful job of disrupting Vikings second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy at Wednesday's practice. However, New England's offensive line was unable to allow Drake Maye to have enough time to finish plays. "Even with four new expected starters up front following last year’s debacle, Wednesday suggested that there will likely be some bumps ahead for this offensive line," Graff wrote. "Sure, going up against the Vikings was always going to be a difficult task. Greenard has been wrecking his own team’s practices in training camp, and everyone in New England knows how good Flores’ scheme can be. But the domination was so thorough by the Vikings’ front seven that three straight plays at one point would’ve resulted in a sack." Maye showed flashes of promise when he had time to throw downfield or was able to use his legs to buy time or scramble when pressure came. The concern is that the offensive line won't allow Maye enough time to even scramble, so he can make throws. Graff has noticed the same issues that happened on Wednesday have been a constant at training camp against the Patriots defense. With a new-look offensive line that includes first-round pick Will Campbell at left tackle, the Patriots are expected to have some bumps at training camp and in September. New England's offense probably won't look great out of the gate while the offensive line develops in offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' scheme. If and when the offensive line improves, Maye will have a chance to show off the arm that made him the No. 3 pick in 2024. For now, the offensive line is a concern much like it was last season.
When Taylor Swift started dating Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in 2023, she knew little about football. Now, the pop star is obsessed with the sport. She tracks who the Chiefs select in the NFL Draft. During her Wednesday debut on Kelce's podcast, "New Heights," Swift recalled going bonkers when Kansas City selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy with pick No. 28 in the 2024 draft. "Oh my god, I fell in love with [football]," Swift said. "I became obsessed with it. I became a person who was running through the halls of my house screaming, 'We drafted Xavier Worthy.' And my friends were like. 'Who's body snatched you? What do you mean we drafted Xavier Worthy?' I was screeching. I couldn't believe it." Kelce said Swift was the first person to tell him the Chiefs selected Worthy, who set a 40-yard dash record (4.21 seconds) at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. "You were the first person to tell me that we drafted the fastest man in the draft," he said. "I couldn't believe it either. I was like, 'Is she right?' I'm gonna have to look this up. Did she get the wrong information here?' But, yeah, we traded up [from pick No. 32 with the Buffalo Bills]." Along with monitoring the Chiefs' drafts, Swift has learned more about the sport's various pass coverages and rules. The 14-time Grammy winner admitted she thought all offensive players played at the same time and didn't know what a first down was before she started dating Kelce. "We're talking about Cover 2, Cover 4, Cover 0, man coverage," she said. "I'm not ready to be an analyst right now, but give me 16 months." Perhaps one of the league's broadcast crews will let Swift make a brief appearance in the booth when she attends one of Kelce's games. Worthy, meanwhile, could continue to showcase why he made Swift ecstatic on draft night. In his rookie season, he had 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdown catches in 17 games. With the Chiefs expanding his role this season, he could be in for a more productive year.
