Watch: Heat win wild back-and-forth game vs. Hawks to reach playoffs

The only thing less likely than a 10th-place team making it out of the play-in tournament was Davion Mitchell being the player whose offensive outburst got them there.

Mitchell made three three-pointers and drew a charge during overtime as the Miami Heat advanced to the playoffs with a 123-114 win over the Atlanta Hawks. He didn't start, but the fourth-year guard played 40 minutes, finishing with 16 points and five assists. He missed one triple in OT, but snuck past Trae Young to grab the offensive rebound, and later sank another three.

Tyler Herro hit two three-pointers of his own in OT, finishing 5-of-10 from behind the arc. He finished with 30 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, two nights after his 38-point effort in a win over the Chicago Bulls.

The Hawks made the Heat sweat down the stretch, making Miami play an extra five minutes for the right to play the 64-18 Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round. Young hit two layups in the final minute, the second one tying the game with 1.1 seconds to go.

Young finished with 29 points and Onyeka Okongwu scored 28 as the Hawks fell just short. They mounted a big comeback, getting big bench scoring from Georges Niang (20 points) and Caris LeVert (15 points), but the Heat were too big for the Hawks. Bam Adebayo blocked five shots and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Haywood Highsmith had 12 points and 10 rebounds, two of them on a ridiculous broken play late in the fourth.

The Heat's season was on life support after a 10-game losing streak from March 5-21. But since then they've gone 10-4, including their two play-in wins, with one loss coming with their starters resting in the season finale.

The Cavaliers will be a tough first-round opponent, but the Heat upset the No. 1-seeded Boston Celtics just two years ago after making their way out of the play-in. The Heat might be underdogs, and they might no longer have Jimmy Butler, but they're still a team no one wants to face in the first round. Even the powerhouse Cavs.
