Magic's league-leading defense a major letdown in Game 1 loss to Celtics

Even with stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown mostly held in check in Sunday's Game 1, the Orlando Magic fell short in a 103-86 loss.

Despite leading 49-48 at the break, the Magic gave up a 15-4 run to the Celtics and had no answers for Boston's transition game and three-point shooting.

The Magic were outscored 26-4 in transition and allowed Boston to shoot 16-of-37 from long-range.

Both areas were on full display when guard Jrue Holiday got the steal and knocked down this trey with 7:30 left in the third quarter to extend Boston's lead to 63-53 and erase any advantage the Magic had entering the break.

Although Tatum (17 points) and Brown (16 points) combined for only 33 points, it was guard Derrick White who took over for the Celtics. White had a team-high 30 points (10-of-18 FG, 7-of-12 3PT).

This triple on an and-one gave White 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting early in the third quarter to put Boston up 58-51.

The poor defensive effort, particularly at the three-point line, was surprising, given the Magic allowed a league-best 105.4 PPG this season, per TeamRankings. Orlando also led the league in opponent points from threes, only allowing 34.

It looked like the Magic had the Celtics where they wanted them in the second quarter. After all, they outscored Boston, 31-22, in the second quarter and took a one-point lead into the half after trailing by 13.

The Magic also had no answer for guard Payton Pritchard, who had 19 points (4-of-6 3PT) off the bench.

Forwards Paolo Banchero (36 points, 11 rebounds) and Franz Wagner (23 points) carried Orlando. Banchero was sensational, hitting this triple to get Orlando to within two late in the first half.

A concern going forward has to be the depth considering no other player on the team had more than seven points (forward Jonathan Isaac).

Given the lack of help surrounding Banchero and Wagner in Game 1 and the poor defensive effort coming out of the half, the Magic have a lot of searching to do if they are going to have any shot in the series.
