Manchester United’s season reaches historic low and could sink even further

Manchester United’s 2024–25 campaign plunged to a historic low on Sunday as it suffered a 1–0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford, confirming this as its worst-ever season in the Premier League era.

Pablo Sarabia’s late free-kick sealed a fifth straight league win for Wolves and completed a league double over United for the first time since 1980. For the Red Devils, the loss deepened an already dire crisis under manager Ruben Amorim.

It marked United’s 15th defeat in the Premier League this season—a new club record—surpassing the 14 losses recorded last year under Erik ten Hag.

The result leaves United stranded in 14th place on 38 points with five games remaining. Even if it wins all of their remaining fixtures, it cannot exceed the 58-point total from the 2021–22 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, confirming a new low for the club in the Premier League era.

The loss was also the team's eighth at home in the league this season, its worst record at Old Trafford since 1962–63, when it was beaten nine times.

Sunday's limp performance against Wolves was emblematic of United’s broader issues: a lack of intensity, creativity and defensive cohesion. The hosts managed just two shots on target across the 90 minutes.

The Old Trafford crowd voiced its displeasure as United looked second-best throughout, outplayed by a side who has spent much of the season battling relegation but appeared hungrier and more organized.

Amorim, who was appointed mid-season with the aim of rejuvenating the squad, now finds himself overseeing a historically dismal campaign. United’s remaining fixtures include trips to Bournemouth, Brentford, and Chelsea, as well as a home clash with top-four contenders Aston Villa—none of which promise easy points.

Unless fortunes dramatically shift, United could finish the season languishing even further in the bottom half of the table.

For a club with Manchester United’s pedigree, this season is not merely disappointing, it’s catastrophic. And with five games still to play, the worst may be yet to come.
