Barry Odom is the new head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers' football program and he has his work cut out for him.
Odom knows a bit about turnarounds. He took a UNLV program that hadn't been bowl eligible in over a decade to two-straight bowl games, with the Rebels boasting a 11-3 record last season.
Purdue, in the meantime, missed bowl eligibility for the past few seasons, so it hired Odom in the hopes that he can create a quick turnaround.
Building a good squad used to be a slow process with the recruiting trail often taking years to pay off. Nowadays, a few transfer portal players can put you right back in it, and Purdue is trying to strike lightning with two transfer wideouts from Georgia who maybe just need a new setting to reach their potentials.
On Monday, Purdue landed transfer portal commitments from former Georgia wide receivers Nitro Tuggle and Michael Jackson III.

Of the two wideouts, Tuggle may have the most upside for Purdue. He played in just seven games and caught only three catches last season for UGA as a freshman. He entered the portal in the winter window, came back and then decided to leave again this spring. He also left while facing a misdemeanor charge on speeding and reckless driving.
Still, Tuggle is a former four-star recruit out of Nappanee, Indiana who was ranked as the No. 20 wideout in the 2024 class. The upside is there for Odom to take this chance.
Jackson had just one catch for 10 yards at Georgia last season. That doesn't seem all that exciting, but he spent the three seasons before at USC where he had more production. In three seasons with the Trojans, he notched 46 catches for 498 yards and five touchdowns.
Like Tuggle, Purdue is banking on his upside and that a fresh start will help him produce more than he has in the past. At the very least, Jackson is a veteran wideout with experience at two of the most high-profile programs in college football. That could be an advantage for Purdue.
Betting on upside is what programs like Purdue have to do in the transfer portal, and that's exactly what Odom and his team have done with these two UGA wideouts.
