Bears add another offensive weapon for Caleb Williams in draft

The Chicago Bears have had a productive offseason, revamping the offensive line and hiring former Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson as the team's new head coach.

Entering the draft, offensive tackle and edge rusher were arguably the top areas to address, however, Chicago utilized its first-round pick on a skill-position player, drafting Michigan tight end Colston Loveland.

In 2024, the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder caught 56 passes for 582 yards and five touchdowns despite Michigan's horrific quarterback play.

The pick was somewhat surprising, as Penn State tight end Tyler Warren was still on the board. Loveland, however, is taller and a more fluid athlete, which may have been the deciding factor between the two prospects.

Nonetheless, Caleb Williams has no excuse to struggle this season with a new play-caller, upgraded protection and an abundance of talent at his disposal.

Johnson has experience developing rookie tight ends, as he coached Sam LaPorta, who was a 2023 second-round pick for Detroit. In his rookie season, LaPorta caught 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Although Loveland is not the run blocker that LaPorta is, he is a smooth route runner who can dominate in the middle parts of the field.

Alongside WRs Rome Odunze and DJ Moore and fellow TE Cole Kmet, Loveland will have ample opportunities to produce and contribute in his rookie campaign.

Chicago has two picks in the second round (Nos. 39 and 41) and could address the offensive tackle and edge rusher needs there.

This may not have been the selection Bears fans wanted, but adding another offensive weapon does not hurt, as Williams' development and growth are paramount in his second year as the team's starting quarterback.
