Son of Falcons assistant coach behind Shedeur Sanders prank call

The biggest story of the 2025 NFL Draft was the slide of quarterback Shedeur Sanders, all the way down to the fifth round, where he was finally selected by the Cleveland Browns. The subplot to that story was a Day 2 prank phone call where unknown callers pretended to be New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis, telling Sanders he had been chose at the top of the second round.

Obviously, it was not Loomis; Sanders was not selected, and he had to wait until well into day three before getting a real phone call from the Browns.

It was such a confusing story because Sanders was using a phone number that was only known by the 32 NFL teams and the league. For somebody to get that number it would have had to be somebody in the league with a team or somebody that had a connection to the league.

As it turns out, it was the latter.

The Atlanta Falcons issued a statement on Sunday saying that Jax Ulbrich, the 21-year-old son of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, was one of the people behind the prank call and the one who acquired the number.

The Falcons insist their coach had nothing to do with it, and that his son got the number when he saw it on an open iPad.

This is not the first time something like this has happened.

It is also not the only time it happened during this year's class.

Former Penn State tight end and Indianapolis Colts first-round pick, Tyler Warren, also received a similar prank call this year, while Cooper DeJean received a similar call during the 2024 NFL Draft.

The Falcons apologized to Sanders and his family, and also set up an opportunity for Jax to apologize personally.

Legally, there is no wrongdoing, and other than losing in the court of public opinion and having to deal with people judging his character, there really isn't anything else to be done here beyond an apology. It is still a pretty low thing to prank somebody in that manner on what should be one of the biggest weekends of their life.

The Falcons should also have some concerns about their defensive coordinator leaving his iPad out in a manner that things can be taken from it that easily. But that is probably an internal discussion they will have.
