Shortly after the New York Giants traded back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to grab Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart at pick No. 25, individuals such as ESPN Giants reporter Jordan Raanan and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio suggested that head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen made the move in an attempt to remain with the organization beyond the 2025 season.
However, Jeff Howe of The Athletic believes Daboll and Schoen "have to deliver results in 2025 to keep their jobs" after the Giants went 9-25 over the past two campaigns. For an article published on Monday, The Athletic's Dan Duggan noted that Daboll and Schoen may feel they have to play Dart ahead of schedule this coming fall, even though the club added both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency so Big Blue could allow a prospect to develop as a backup.
"[Giants co-owner John Mara] unquestionably put Schoen and coach Brian Daboll on the hot seat after last season, explaining that he was retaining the duo but needed to see rapid improvement 'because I’ve just about run out of patience,'" Duggan wrote. "...If the Giants are losing and the offense is struggling, don’t be surprised if Dart’s development timeline gets expedited."
Last spring, then-New England Patriots rookie Drake Maye was very much a work in progress who was ideally supposed to spend the majority of his first pro season sitting behind veteran Jacoby Brissett. Maye then largely outperformed Brissett during preseason games, and former head coach Jerod Mayo named Maye the team's starter after just five contests amid reports about a possible locker room mutiny.
As for Dart's current teammates, Wilson lost his final five starts with the Pittsburgh Steelers before they let him hit the open market in March. Meanwhile, Winston went 2-5 with 12 interceptions over seven starts and 12 appearances with the Cleveland Browns this past season.
"Schoen and Daboll were in Buffalo when the Bills took Josh Allen with the seventh pick in the 2018 draft," Duggan explained. "Allen was a raw prospect who needed time to develop, and the Bills wanted the Wyoming product to learn from the sideline. That plan lasted less than a week. Nathan Peterman was so dreadful in the Bills’ season opener that Allen took over in the third quarter while trailing the Ravens 40-0. Allen was named the starter in Week 2 and has maintained that role for the past seven years."
Additionally, one can't help but wonder how Mara may react if Dart struggles while playing for a losing Giants team and Shedeur Sanders looks like the real deal with the Browns. Daboll clearly wants Wilson to be atop the depth chart come Labor Day, but it seems there's at least a small chance that Dart could end September as New York's starter.
