How does latest George Kittle news impact Brock Purdy?

The San Francisco 49ers can cross one big item off their offseason to-do list.

On Tuesday, NFL Media's Ian Rapoport tweeted the 49ers and six-time Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle agreed to a four-year, $76.4M contract extension with $40M guaranteed, making him the highest-paid player at his position. Rapoport implied quarterback Brock Purdy could be next.

Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 and is scheduled to make $5.34M this upcoming season. The 49ers, however, want to give him a new contract.

"Brock wants to be with us. We want Brock to be with us," 49ers general manager John Lynch said March 31, via David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard. "When that's the case, these things get done... Hopefully, it happens really soon this offseason."

In a story published April 23, The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported the 49ers have been "inching closer" to a contract that would make Purdy one of the 10 highest-paid players in the league.

Spotrac estimates the 25-year-old's market value is a four-year deal worth $59.7M annually.

Kittle's extension will eat up some cap space, but San Francisco should still have enough to make room for Purdy's new deal. Entering Monday, the 49ers had $39.4M in cap space, per Spotrac's salary cap tracker. The site estimates Kittle's 2025 cap hit will be $22.02M.

Should the 49ers give Purdy a mega-deal? That's debatable. If he signs the hypothetical contract, he'll be making more than Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson, who have all won at least one MVP. The team could also use the franchise tag on Purdy after the 2025 season.

Still, the Niners may feel they need the one-time Pro Bowler to rebound into Super Bowl contention. Last season, San Francisco went 6-11, missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2020 season.

After the team extended Kittle, don't be surprised if it gives Purdy one soon.
