Could 49ers, Brock Purdy contract talks extend into the summer?

For a piece published on April 28, Nick Wagoner of ESPN wrote that "it wouldn't be a surprise" if the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy put pen to paper on a contract extension "by the time the Niners begin [organized team activities] near the end of May."

It appears Wagoner may have been a bit too optimistic regarding the situation coming off the 2025 NFL Draft.

"They're not close," Tom Pelissero of NFL Network said during a Tuesday appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," as shared by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone. "Nothing's imminent from my understanding here. But certainly this is a deal that I would anticipate that all parties have a vested interest in getting done before we get to training camp."

The 49ers followed their salary-cap-clearing activities from earlier in the offseason by locking star tight end George Kittle down via a four-year extension reportedly worth $76.4M with $40M guaranteed. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport teased when news about that deal broke on Tuesday morning that Purdy could be the next 49ers player to receive a significant pay raise.

Back at the start of April, 49ers CEO Jed York suggested that Purdy deserves to be paid like "a top-10" player at the sport's most important position. Going off figures posted on the Spotrac website, Purdy's representatives may be looking to secure a deal worth at least $51M per season.

"Purdy is there," Pelissero added about how the final pick of the 2022 draft is spending springtime workouts. "He is working out with the team. He chose to be around, even though there's this ongoing situation involving his contract. I would certainly anticipate...This is going to be right there, in the 50s, probably, with Brock Purdy. They've made it very clear that they want Brock Purdy to be the long-term quarterback solution in San Francisco."

York, 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have all strongly backed Purdy throughout the offseason. That said, Purdy is in the final year of his inexpensive rookie deal and could have his rights for 2026 retained via the franchise tag if talks between the sides fell apart at any point before the 2025 campaign gets underway.

There remains no sign as of the final day of April that the Purdy-49ers situation could get ugly. However, one wonders if Purdy will feel disrespected if he enters the Niners' summer break without an extension in hand.
