Eyebrows were raised when it was suggested following the 2025 NFL Draft that contract extension talks between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy could last through the spring because the two sides were "not close" to agreeing to terms.
However, NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic offered some good news to nervous 49ers fans regarding Purdy's future during the latest edition of her "Scoop City" podcast.
"I think there’s some talk out there that they’re far apart on this and that this is going to take a while," Russini said about the Purdy-49ers situation, as shared by Kyle Posey of the Niners Nation website. "I don’t get that sense. The sense that I’m getting is that they’re closer than what we think. I don't believe Brock Purdy shows up for [voluntary workouts] if he doesn’t feel good that they’re near a number that he’s happy with. That’s how it usually works with players."
49ers CEO Jed York, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have all hinted since the end of the 2024 season that they don't want Purdy playing on the final year of his inexpensive rookie deal. While the club could retain Purdy's rights for 2026 via the franchise tag, doing so could make him more expensive because the quarterback market gets reset just about every year.
At least one salary cap specialist believes Purdy's extension could pay him roughly $55M per campaign after York said earlier this offseason that he views the 25-year-old as a top-10 quarterback. According to David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone, Russini indicated that she thinks Purdy's deal will pay him between $52M-$53M per season.
"Very rarely are guys showing up if they’re that far apart," Russini added about Purdy participating in the voluntary portion of the offseason program. "To me, that action alone tells me they’re close. But also, doing some digging on it, I think this is still moving in a really good direction. I don’t think there should be any concern."
Nobody involved will be spiking any footballs until pen gets put to paper, but it sounds like Purdy could ink an extension long before he's scheduled to report for training camp later this summer.
