Pete Alonso is playing with his hair on fire in 2025.
At the very least, the New York Mets' first baseman is hitting as if he has something to prove, like cashing in on a potential second trip to free agency this coming offseason.
With the Mets down 1-0 in Arizona in the top of the fourth inning, the reigning National League Player of the Month didn't miss his pitch, a 90 mph cutter at the top of the strike zone, crushing that ball 425 feet into the desert night.

The two-run home run, off Diamondbacks' right-hander Ryne Nelson, was Alonso's ninth of the season and also resulted in his 32nd and 33rd runs batted in (RBI) of the season, placing him behind only Dodgers' outfielder Teoscar Hernandez, who leads the National League with 34 RBI.
Home runs and RBI aren't the only facets of the Polar Bear's game in 2025, however: Alonso currently sports a .346 average and a ridiculous .468 on-base percentage in addition to an eye-popping 1.145 OPS over 127 at-bats.
Pete Alonso has been an absolute machine. The average (.346) and power (.677 slugging percentage) are undeniable. Most impressive, though, is the plate discipline. He has more walks than strikeouts — and has punched in just 15.2% of his plate appearances. pic.twitter.com/Ymb5Km4LP8

All in all, the 30-year-old first baseman isn't merely setting himself up for a potentially massive payday should he opt-out of his current two-year deal with the Mets: He should also be firmly in the early discussion for National League MVP.
