Padres' bats come alive in eighth to steal win over Yankees

Padres' bats come alive in eighth to steal win at rainy Yankee Stadium

The San Diego Padres took advantage of the struggling New York Yankees and extended their win streak in the process. Keeping pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the top of the National League West, the Padres beat the Yankees, 4-3, on Monday night.

Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts led the way for San Diego, as they each drove in two runs to complete the comeback win.

New York enjoyed the lead most of the game thanks to a Trent Grisham two-run shot in the third inning and then another run in the sixth.

But it was in the eighth inning when the Padres' bats came alive and stole the game.

First, Machado lined a ball into deep left field, sending two runners home and getting himself to second base with a double.

Then, with a steady backdrop of rain at Yankee Stadium, Bogaerts, who finished the game going 2-for-3, connected on a base hit that easily scored Machado from second. And that series of events ended up being enough to steal a big road win in the Bronx.

Now with a one-run lead heading into the ninth, closer Robert Suarez shut the door and earned his 14th save of the season.

The win was the Padres sixth in a row and moves their overall record to 23-11.

It's also worth noting the Padres are winning despite the recent struggles of their superstar right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr., who was 0-for-4 on Monday in New York after an 0-for-5 showing on Sunday in Pittsburgh and only recording one total hit throughout their entire sweep of the Pirates.

Tatis is now hitting .317 with eight home runs and 18 RBI in 33 games so far this season.

San Diego will now look to win the series with Game 2 of the three-game set scheduled for 7:05 pm ET on Tuesday.
