Scottie Scheffler tied the PGA Tour's 72-hole scoring record with his dominant, eight-shot win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
The 28-year-old had a chance to test his red-hot game against the best in the world leading up to the second major championship of the season, but he's decided to skip this week's Truist Championship at Philadelphia Cricket Club.
You'd think the top players would want to sharpen their games as much as possible the week leading up to a major, but that's not how Scheffler operates.
Both of his Masters victories came after taking a week off. He's played the week before a major just twice in his last six appearances, and they just happened to be his two worst finishes in that span. Scheffler finished T23 at the 2023 Open Championship after playing in the Scottish Open the week before, and he finished T41 at the 2024 U.S. Open the week after winning the Memorial.
Every player has different preferences for major championship prep, and Scheffler feels teeing it up the week before hurts him more than helps. As a Dallas native, he also wanted to show love to his hometown event at TPC Craig Ranch and limit his travel leading up to the PGA Championship.

He explained his thought process during an appearance on the "Dan on Golf" podcast with Dan Rapaport on Monday.
"Well, I mean, it’s nice for me to be at home for a week, and this will give me three weeks in a row at home leading into a major, and it’s nice to have that," Scheffler said. "In terms of major championship prep, last year going into the U.S. Open, I feel like I learned a little bit about my prep work. Going from the Memorial to the U.S. Open was definitely a challenge, playing a really difficult golf course before. Having not played Philly Cricket before, maybe that factored into my decision a little bit."
Scheffler will head to Quail Hollow Club feeling fresh and confident after the biggest winning margin of his career. The World No. 1 is currently a +450 favorite (FanDuel) to win the PGA Championship.
