Mariners rally to beat Athletics, continue massive series winning streak

For a moment, it seemed as if the Seattle Mariners' streak was in jeopardy.

They lost to the Athletics on Monday night, and on Tuesday, the Athletics took them to the ninth inning before Cal Raleigh, who was pinch-hitting, put Seattle ahead with a two-run single in the ninth inning.

That left the fate of Seattle's series win streak hanging on the rubber match on Wednesday, and the Mariners were once again on the ropes. They found themselves down, 5-0, after four innings and then down 5-1 in the top of the sixth before  Rowdy Tellez rocketed them back into the game with a three-run homer.

The Mariners then plated two in the top of the eighth to go up 6-5, and that was all the wiggle room they needed. Andres Munoz notched another save — his 14th of the season — and Seattle claimed its ninth straight series win.

“That’s just how you win games,” Tellez said after the game, according to Tim Booth of The Seattle Times. “We’re a tight-knit group, and they’ve obviously been tighter for longer than I’ve been a part of. But that’s something we do. We don’t give up. We fight tooth and nail to the end and I think today showed (it).”

The last time the Mariners had a streak like this was in 2001, when they won 15 series in a row. They went 116-46 that record-breaking season and welcomed Ichiro Suzuki into the major leagues as he won AL Rookie of the Year and AL MVP awards.

That 2001 season ushered in a great era of baseball in Seattle, and perhaps the Mariners are on the cusp of another great era now.

With the win, they improve to 22-14 on the young season, and they're now three games ahead of the A's in the AL West.
