If you didn't watch the Carolina Panthers play football last season, you probably wouldn't have known that former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney is still playing in the NFL. Clowney, however, will not be spending a second season with Carolina.
It was announced on Thursday by Tom Pelissero that the Panthers had released Clowney, immediately making him one of the best remaining free agents on the market.

After spending the first five seasons of his career with the Houston Texans, Clowney has bounced around the league a bit.
He's played for five different teams over the last six seasons and that number could very well change to six in the last seven seasons after next year.
Clowney has still been able to produce at a high level, as he collected 15 sacks and 89 tackles over the last two seasons.
Several teams across the league could use Clowney, but there are certainly some that need him more than others. Here are the three teams that would benefit the most from the addition of Clowney to their defense.
New England Patriots
New England ranked last in the NFL last season with only 28 sacks. That area of its defense needs to be much improved and the addition of Clowney would do wonders.
Clowney would join an already loaded defensive free agent class that the Patriots brought in that includes Super Bowl champion Milton Williams, Harold Landry, Robert Spillane and others.
Also, Clowney played for Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel in 2020 when Vrabel was the coach of the Tennessee Titans. The two are familiar with each other and could be a reunion worth looking into for New England.

Atlanta Falcons
Atlanta finished just one spot ahead of New England in the sacks department last season with only 31. Much like the Patriots, the Falcons also need pass rushing help in a major way.
They drafted defensive end James Pierce Jr. out of the University of Tennessee in the first round of the NFL Draft, and what better mentor for a rookie than a former No. 1 overall pick.
Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati may actually be able to afford Clowney in his age-32 season, rather than when he was fresh off his rookie contract back in 2019.
The Bengals were in the bottom half of the NFL with only 36 sacks last season, so adding Clowney would hopefully help increase that number.
Not only would Clowney help bring pressure, but his presence could limit the big plays that caused the Bengals to allow 25.5 points per game, which was seventh worst in the league.
