The Cleveland Cavaliers are in a tough situation. After earning the No. 1 seed in the East with a dominant 64-18 record, Cleveland was projected to make it to the Conference Finals with little resistance. But after a disappointing Game 1 and heartbreaking Tyrese Haliburton's game-winner in Game 2, the Cavs are down 2-0 to the Indiana Pacers.
The main concern for the Cavaliers is their mounting list of injuries. All-Star guard Darius Garland has missed four straight games this postseason due to a left toe injury, and newly-minted Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley was out for Game 2 because of a left ankle sprain he suffered in the series opener. Just to add insult to literal injury, wing De'Andre Hunter, whom the Cavs traded for at the deadline to shore up their weak perimeter, couldn't suit up because of a dislocated right thumb.
The Cavs are so plagued by injuries that even their players who remain in the rotation are playing through injury. According to Joe Vardon at The Athletic, Cleveland's superstar Donovan Mitchell is playing through a calf strain.
"I'm banged up, but we all are," Mitchell told the outlet.
Despite the circumstances, Mitchell was not making excuses on or off the court.
“For us, if they [Garland, Mobley and Hunter] play Friday, great. We definitely need them. But if they don’t, we gotta be ready, understand that we’ve shown we can do this.” the Cavs point guard said.
Mitchell certainly proved that he was ready on the court in Game 2, putting up 48 points, nine assists and four steals.

But who are the other Cavaliers who can "be ready" if the injured trio of Garland, Mobley and Hunter can't return for Game 3? Reserve shooting guard Max Strus would certainly fit the bill.
The six-year veteran has playoff experience, including a finals run with the Miami Heat in 2023, and he put up a playoff career-high 23 points in the second game of the series. If Cleveland has hopes of extending this series and fending off a sweep, Strus needs to maintain that form.
Another Cav who could step up is Ty Jerome. In his second year in Cleveland, Jerome has had the best season of his career. He averaged 12.5/2.5/3.4 in the regular season and finished third in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
Jerome had a great Game 1, finishing with 21 points, eight assists and three rebounds but had a dismal second game where he went 1-for-14 from the field and finished with just two points. With more opportunities due to the injuries, Jerome needs to make the most of his extended playing time and play like his regular-season self. There have been glimpses earlier in the playoffs, such as a 28-point explosion against the Heat in the opening game of the postseason, but he needs to be more consistent for Cleveland to turn the tables on Indiana.
Despite these injuries, the Cavaliers need to find a way to come through in Game 3 in Indiana on Friday night, as no team has ever come back down 3-0 in NBA playoff history.
