The Carolina Hurricanes struck first in a pivotal Game 3 of the East semifinals against the Washington Capitals.
Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov scored directly following a face-off 12 minutes into the second period, getting to the puck before Capitals defenseman John Carlson and quickly ripping a shot to the top left of the net past Capitals goalie Logan Thompson for a 1-0 lead.

Per the TNT broadcast, the Hurricanes entered Saturday 30-7-2 when scoring first this season, the fourth-best record in the NHL.
The goal was Svechnikov's 21st in the Stanley Cup playoffs, the second most in franchise history. Only teammate Sebastian Aho (30) has more.
Center Jack Roslovic scored on a power play six minutes later with defenseman Brent Burns and forward Taylor Hall picking up assists to give Carolina a 2-0 advantage.
Goals had been hard to come by for the Hurricanes through the first two games and one period, but the second 20 minutes on Saturday might have been their breakthrough.
It was Carolina's first multi-goal period against the Caps. The Hurricanes scored three goals total in the previous two games, with two coming in regulation.
It hasn't been for a lack of aggression. As NHL.com senior writer Dan Rosen noted before Game 3, the Hurricanes had a whopping 180 total shots (61 shots on goal) in the series' first two games, compared to 84 (35 shots on goal) for the Capitals.
"I'd say luck isn't there, but we're not going to change a thing," defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said.
Luck was on their side in the second period. They'll need a couple more breaks to advance to the Eastern Conference Final.
