The Chicago Cubs continue to hold onto first place in the National League Central thanks to a 5-2 win over the Marlins on Monday. After losing to the Mets on Sunday to drop the series, the Cubs responded with a victory that keeps them one game ahead of the rival St. Louis Cardinals, who also won on the day.
Chicago's win was powered by two home runs and an RBI triple. And all five runs took place in a wild fifth inning that cracked the game wide open after being scoreless through four.
First, Dansby Swanson crushed his ninth homer of the season to deep left field. Swanson was 2-for-4 in the game with that two-run shot.
Then, Kyle Tucker sent a runner home by ripping a triple off the wall in right field. While his ball stayed in the ballpark, the Wrigley Field crowd loved every second of Tucker getting all the way to third with two outs to extend the inning, granted, he didn't actually need to hustle to eventually score.

Not to be outdone, Seiya Suzuki sent his 10th long ball over the fence in left center field, scoring Tucker and increasing Chicago's lead to 5-0. Suzuki now has a team-leading 34 RBI on the season.

Even though Derek Hill would finally get Florida on the board in the seventh inning with a home run of his own, the Cubs held a large enough of an advantage that it didn't matter.
With the win, the Cubs are now 24-18 on the year as they look to win their first series since the beginning of the month. Game 2 of this three-game set with the Marlins will take place on Tuesday night at 7:40 p.m.
