Cowboys need big game from Dak Prescott in 2025 season opener

The Dallas Cowboys will open the 2025 NFL regular season on Thursday, Sept. 4, with a road matchup against the Eagles. The Philadelphia Eagles will commemorate their second Super Bowl championship by raising a banner, while Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will look to raise his game.

The 31-year-old passer may be 9-4 against the Eagles for his career, but he’s 3-3 in games at Lincoln Financial Field. He missed nine games with a hamstring injury last season, including two matchups against the Eagles. As a result, Philadelphia outscored Dallas 75-13 and swept their division rival for the first time since 2011.

While Prescott’s overall numbers against the Eagles are good, his 4-5 record in season openers is not. His last win on opening day came against the Browns last season, with the others coming against the Giants, neither one a playoff team.

Meanwhile, the Eagles have made the playoffs four straight years under head coach Nick Sirianni and beat the Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl LIX in February.

With the exception of the Baltimore Ravens, who had a scheduling conflict in 2013, the defending Super Bowl champions have hosted the league’s opening game since 2004. More importantly, championship teams went 15-5 in those games.

To his credit, the team captain appears ready for the challenge. When asked to compare his team to the Eagles this offseason, he sounded very optimistic.

“I feel like we've competed with the Eagles and beat them for the most part when we've played them,” he told reporters. “I don't want to say, 'Check the record,' when the other guy is holding the trophy, right? So credit to them. They've earned it, and they deserve it by all means. But, yeah, (we're) very close."

He could be right, but he’ll need to play more like the quarterback that finished second in MVP voting two years ago and less like the one that took 21 sacks and threw eight interceptions in eight games last season.

The Dallas Cowboys will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
