Packers may have found a great 'stash QB' in Canada's Taylor Elgersma

The Green Bay Packers have their starting quarterback in Jordan Love. They paid him a ton of money and believe he can be their superstar.

They also have a quarterback who proved to be one heck of a backup last season in Malik Willis, who was castaway from the Tennessee Titans and ultimately ended up helping Green Bay win three games in 2024.

So why did they go out and sign Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma on Monday?

Perhaps the Packers feel they have found the perfect "stash quarterback."

Elgersma tried out at the Packers' rookie minicamp last week. He was set to attend the Buffalo Bills' rookie minicamp this week, but instead came back to Green Bay for a follow-up interview. Bill Huber of On SI is now reporting that he was signed by the Packers on Monday.

So who is Elgersma?

He's a Canadian-born quarterback who went undrafted and unsigned but he made a name for himself in the Packers' rookie minicamp.

"He’s got a very live arm. We could see that on tape,” head coach Matt LaFleur had said of Elgersma, per Huber.

Elgersma played college football at Wilfried Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. He was so good for the Golden Hawks that he won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2014, which is the Canadian version of the Heisman Trophy.

Though he wasn't selected in the NFL Draft, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers took him 18th overall in the CFL Draft. That didn't stop him from jumping at the opportunity to try out for the Packers, though.

"I know that playing in Canada, there are a lot of questions about whether I could play at that level. And this was my first opportunity to show them that I could compete with those guys, in their building for three straight days, that I could digest playbooks, that I could handle the pace of the game," Elgersma said of the opportunity in Green Bay, according to his college team's website.

He'll now go into fall camp with the opportunity to compete alongside Love and Willis as well as 2023 fifth-round pick Sean Clifford.

There's little chance Elgersma will beat out Willis, but he could beat out Clifford to become the Packers' third quarterback. If that's the case, the Packers could end up stashing him away on the practice squad in hopes that he quickly picks up the ins and outs of NFL football. Even if Clifford is still ahead of him on the depth chart, Green Bay may want to try to cut him, hope he clears waivers, and then immediately bring him back onto the practice squad to develop him for a while.

The talent is clearly there, but there will absolutely be an adjustment for the Canadian star.

Either way, hidden down on the practice squad, the Packers could slowly but surely teach Elgersma the ropes, and from there, who knows what could happen for him?

There's proven to be no better place for a quarterback to develop than Green Bay, so it will be interesting to see what Elgersma's professional future will look like.

When you're talking about a perfect "stash quarterback", though, Elgersma definitely fits the bill.
