The 2025 PGA Championship is being held at a venue that is as well-kept as any but not exactly universally adored, and longtime pro golfer Hunter Mahan had a great way of explaining why.
The first round of the PGA Championship will get underway on Thursday at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C. The 2017 PGA Championship was also played at Quail Hollow, as well as the 2022 Presidents Cup.
While Quail Hollow is viewed as an immaculate course that is well-suited for hosting hoards of fans, many feel it lacks the charm of some other major venues. Mahan, a six-time winner on the PGA Tour, had the perfect analogy for the course this week.
“I guess I would say Quail Hollow is like a Kardashian,” Mahan said, via Gabby Herzig of The Athletic. “It’s very modern, beautiful and well-kept. But it lacks a soul or character.”
Quail Hollow was founded in 1959 and has undergone infinite changes over the years. President Johnny Harris has overseen renovations that include adding and removing bunkers, lengthening holes, creating water hazards and completely redesigning greens.
Though few venues are more aesthetically pleasing than Quail Hollow, many golfers feel it lacks the type of uniqueness that makes a major championship venue truly memorable. In that sense, you can understand why Mahan compared the course to a Kardashian.
