Sports media personality Skip Bayless attracted some attention this spring for claiming that Las Vegas Raiders minority owner Tom Brady was behind the club's decision to pass on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders multiple times in the 2025 NFL Draft.
In a video posted on YouTube, Bayless accused Brady of lying after the seven-time Super Bowl champion insisted he "wasn’t a part of any evaluation process" regarding Sanders, who fell to the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the draft.
"I know I’m right," Bayless said, per Reice Shipley of Awful Announcing.
Bayless referenced how first-year Raiders general manager John Spytek, Brady's former teammate at Michigan, told The Athletic's Dan Pompei that those in the organization's front office would "have to be fools not to involve" Brady in conversations about the team's quarterback moves. According to Pompei, Brady "met with Spytek and coaches to discuss" veteran quarterbacks following this past season. Pompei also shared that Brady "spent another day with Spytek discussing college quarterback prospects" during predraft evaluations.
Sanders' well-known relationship with Brady left reporters and analysts believing TB12 would campaign for the Raiders to grab the polarizing prospect who remained on the board at the start of the draft's final day. Instead, Las Vegas selected seven players before the Cleveland Browns took Sanders with pick No. 144.
Meanwhile, Pompei noted that "Brady endorsed" the Raiders acquiring Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks and "was on board with the selection of quarterback Cam Miller in the sixth round" of the draft. Thus, it seems like Brady was more than an observer as the Raiders made certain roster-building decisions this offseason.
"That was [Deion Sanders'] son, Shedeur, the same quarterback Tom Brady mentored and coached since he was a sophomore in high school," Bayless added. "So, Tom Brady wants us to believe that his good friend Spytek, who also was an executive with the Bucs when he was down in Tampa, wouldn’t ask him, as a Raiders owner, one thing about Shedeur? ...Come on, man. Nobody knew more about Shedeur than you did, Tom. That’s tangibly and intangibly. He spent so much time around the kid. And let’s just fess up to it. He obviously vetoed that kid to Spytek."
Brady presumably would have some inside information about how Sanders reportedly bombed the predraft process, so much so that some owners allegedly "took him off" draft boards for their teams. If nothing else, Bayless' latest comments show that Brady should expect to hear more questions about the Raiders' passing on Sanders leading up to the 2025 season.
