Former Atlanta Braves All-Star shortstop Rafael Furcal is in trouble with the law.
Chris Gothner of Local10.com reported that Furcal turned himself in at a Broward County jail on Wednesday. He is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle over an incident that allegedly occurred on Monday.
Few details about the incident have been made available. Furcal turned himself in without incident. The charges have been made public, but any further details, including what led to the allegations against Furcal, have yet to be released. Likewise, the nature of the "missile" has not been explained, but Florida statutes indicate that it could be an object such as a rock or a baseball.
This is not Furcal's first brush with the law. He was charged with a DUI and underage alcohol consumption in 2000. Furcal was charged with another DUI and violating his probation in 2004, ultimately spending 21 days in jail and a 28-day in-house treatment program.
Furcal had another controversy during his career. He was originally believed to have been born in 1980; however, it was discovered that he was two years older as part of the post-Sept. 11 crackdown on fraudulent documents as well as updated MLB regulations.
Furcal spent parts of 14 years in the majors, playing for the Braves, Dodgers, Cardinals and Marlins. The 2000 National League Rookie of the Year was a three-time All-Star, won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011 and earned down-ballot MVP votes twice. Furcal ended his career with a .281/.346/.402 batting line in his 7,237 plate appearances, hitting 113 homers and 311 doubles while stealing 314 bases.
