All-Star Jalen Williams has been complete letdown for Thunder

Some were skeptical of the Oklahoma City Thunder's title chances even after they won 68 games and maintained the highest points differential in NBA history

A lot of that doubt stemmed from Jalen Williams' performance in last year's playoffs, when he disappeared down the stretch against the Dallas Mavericks and did not do his part in supporting co-star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Entering this year's playoffs, Williams vowed to carry his weight, which he did against the weaker Memphis Grizzlies.

But Williams has again let his team down against a more formidable foe in the Denver Nuggets. Through the series' first six games, he's shooting a disastrous 33.7% from the field and 21.2% from three, averaging 16.5 points. Those numbers have nosedived from the regular season, when he averaged 21.6 points at 48% from the field and 37% from deep.

Williams was rewarded with his first All-Star Game nod for his regular-season exploits. However, he hasn't resembled an All-Star in the least against Denver. In Thursday's pivotal Game 6, he shot 3-of-16 for a playoff career-low six points as his team failed to close out the Nuggets.

The Colorado native's struggles have sparked comparisons with James Harden, who has notoriously disappeared countless times in the playoffs despite his storied career.

Thunder fans have good reason to be wary ahead of Sunday's Game 7, but head coach Mark Daigneault has faith in Williams to get out of his shooting slump.

"He's a really motivated competitor. He'll be ready to go on Sunday," Daigneault said of Williams. "I'm sure he's disappointed, as we all are in the outcome of the game, and we're all looking at what we could have done better, but when the ball goes up in the air Sunday, he's gonna be ready to rock."

Sunday's Game 7 will be the biggest in the careers of Williams and most of the Thunder's youthful squad. Aside from SGA, no OKC player has played in a Game 7, including Alex Caruso, who won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2020 Orlando Bubble.
