After a decade-plus-long quest to return to college football prominence, the Texas Longhorns have finally reverted to being one of college football's premier teams over the past couple of years.
While former five-star and perfectly rated quarterback recruit Quinn Ewers, ended up leading the program to glory, he did so with a shadow over him. Despite once being viewed as the chosen one, fans seemingly would have run Ewers out of town in order to watch his backup, Arch Manning, take over.
The nephew of Super Bowl-champion quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning also came into Texas as a No. 1 overall recruit, but obviously had a much more famous family. With his famous last name and combination of athleticism and arm talent, fans moved on quickly.
Although it likely wasn't easy for Ewers to deal with, he handled it like a true professional, and now that he is in the NFL, wants nothing but the best for Manning. He even revealed how well he thinks the youngest Manning quarterback will do next season.
“He’s great. He’s a good kid,” Ewers said to On3. “He was definitely fun to have in the quarterback room. We’re good buddies.
“I’m super excited to see what he does," Ewers added. "He’s a hard-working kid, he’s a hard studier. He’s going to set himself up to be as successful as he wants to be, and I think he’s got a chance to go do exactly that and continue on living out what we built at Texas.”
While Manning prepares to take over in Austin, Ewers is looking to make a lasting impression with the Miami Dolphins, who took him in the seventh round of this year's NFL Draft. He will have a chance to learn from and back up Tua Tagovailoa, and shine in an offensive system that he called the same as Texas'.
Only time will tell if Ewers can reach the potential he once was perceived to have, but he did leave Texas in a much better spot.
