Excitement for the Preakness Stakes was already tempered a bit going into the race when Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty was pulled out, ending any chance of a Triple Crown this year.
A growing number of owners and trainers of Kentucky Derby winners have chosen to skip the Preakness Stakes due to the short turnaround, instead focusing on the final jewel of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes.
It's a trend that has generated some controversy within the horse racing community, ending the chances of a rare Triple Crown. There was a 37-year drought between Affirmed's Triple Crown in 1978 and the next winner, American Pharoah, in 2015.
Justify, which like American Pharoah was trained by horse racing legend Bob Baffert, won the Triple Crown in 2018.
“It is troubling, and it has been troubling for several years,” Jerry Bailey, a Hall of Fame jockey turned NBC Sports analyst, told The Associated Press. “It’s completely flip-flopped from my generation when it was the rule that they would run back and the exception that they wouldn’t.”

But the Preakness Stakes gave some others a chance to rebound, including Kentucky Derby favorite Journalism which came in as the favorite in the Preakness Stakes at 6-to-5 odds.
