Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger is among those who believe the club needs to convince quarterback Aaron Rodgers to sign a contract to be its 2025 Week 1 starter before the organized team activities portion of Pittsburgh's offseason gets underway on May 27.
During Monday's edition of the "Pro Football Talk Live" program, NFL insider Mike Florio updated his prediction for when Steelers fans can expect to see Rodgers practicing with the men who will be his teammates in Pittsburgh.
"The Steelers only have six OTA days before the mandatory minicamp (that runs from June 10-12)," Florio explained while speaking about Rodgers, as shared by Jeremy Pike of Steelers Depot. "I think he will be there next Tuesday, May 27, when the OTAs, Phase 3, begins. That's nine practices before training camp. That's enough time to get him properly ensconced. ...I think there's going to be a press conference this week, and he'll be there with the team next Tuesday."
Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly of "The Pat McAfee Show" previously said that he believed Rodgers simply didn't "wanna show up to minicamp or OTAs." However, a so-called "source who knows Rodgers" later told Florio that the future Hall of Famer could report to the Steelers when "the offseason program becomes, from Rodgers' perspective, highly relevant" following the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
According to Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune/NOLA.com, "Rodgers never really was a consideration for" a New Orleans Saints team that recently lost starter Derek Carr to retirement. The Saints could be on track to name rookie Tyler Shough their Week 1 starter, and the fact that New Orleans seemingly isn't interested in Rodgers leaves the Steelers as the only realistic landing spot for the 41-year-old unless a different team loses a QB1 to an injury.
Per Brigid Kennedy of Sports Illustrated, biographer Ian O'Connor said during a Friday appearance on Pittsburgh sports radio station 93.7 The Fan that he thinks Rodgers will "be in uniform June 10 for the start of the mandatory minicamp" after the veteran "took so much grief" for skipping the New York Jets' mandatory minicamp last June due to a trip to Egypt. While nothing is for sure until Rodgers puts pen to paper on a contract, it sounds like in-the-know individuals think he is just about ready to make a commitment to the Steelers for at least the 2025 season.
