How Lions' Jared Goff impacted 49ers' negotiations with Brock Purdy for contract extension

The San Francisco 49ers and starting quarterback Brock Purdy recently agreed to a five-year, $265M contract extension that includes $181M in guarantees.

For an article published on Monday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shared how Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff receiving a four-year extension that included $170M guaranteed and could be worth up to $212M last offseason impacted what Purdy's camp accepted from the 49ers this spring.

"The contract has $165.05M in new money over the first three new years, which edged out a metric Jared Goff’s deal in Detroit hit last year," Breer wrote about Purdy's agreement. "That means he’ll get $170.14M over the first four years of the contract (2025 to ’28). Goff’s deal was an important comparison because both sides saw it as one that didn’t break records but did well by the player in many different ways."

The Spotrac website shows that Purdy and Goff are set to be tied for seventh in the league as it pertains to average annual salary for quarterbacks this coming season. Like Goff before him, Purdy also got a no-trade clause that Breer said "was off the table initially and a first for the Niners."

Goff inked his deal months after the 2023 Lions squandered a 24-7 lead en route to losing the NFC Championship Game to Purdy and the 49ers. More recently, both the 49ers and Lions were decimated by injuries throughout the 2024 season. San Francisco ended the campaign at 6-11, while the Lions went 15-2 before they suffered an upset loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs.

According to Pro Football Reference, Purdy ended the 2024 regular season ranked seventh in the league with a 67.9 adjusted QBR, 13th with a 96.1 passer rating, fifth with an average of 257.6 passing yards per game and tied for 15th with 20 passing touchdowns (over 15 contests). To compare, Goff was sixth with a 68.4 adjusted QBR, second with a 111.8 passer rating, second with an average of 272.3 passing yards per contest and fourth with 37 touchdowns through the air (17 games).

Purdy's representatives could've argued that he deserved to make as much as Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow earns ($55M per year) since San Francisco's QB1 is a one-time MVP finalist who nearly guided the Niners to a Super Bowl championship in February 2024. However, Breer noted that Purdy "didn’t want things to get ugly" as the two sides worked to get a deal done before the start of training camp.

In the end, Purdy seemingly has millions of reasons to want to send Goff a thank-you note ahead of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
